About these terms
These terms apply when you use The ChemEng Student, including this website, the app and any plan you buy. By creating an account or buying a plan, you agree to them. Please read them alongside our Privacy policy, which explains how we use your personal data, and our Cookie policy.
If you use the service as a consumer, nothing in these terms affects your legal rights, including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Who we are
The ChemEng Student is run by The ChemEng Student LTD, a company registered in Scotland with company number SC728384. Our registered office is 220 Mallace Avenue, Armadale, Bathgate, Scotland, EH48 2GE.
We hold a licence from the Copyright Licensing Agency, and our business insurance is provided by Simply Business Group Ltd.
You can contact us at info@chemengstudent.com. When we say "we", "us" or "our" in these terms, we mean The ChemEng Student LTD.
Your account
- You create your account at the end of the setup, where you tell us about your studies so we can build your pathway. You sign in with a code we email you, or with Google where it’s offered, so there’s no password to remember.
- Your account is for you alone. Don’t share your sign-in codes, and don’t let anyone else use your account.
- You’re responsible for what happens in your account, so tell us straight away at info@chemengstudent.com if you think someone else has got into it.
- Keep the details in your account accurate, so we can reach you about your account and your plan.
Plans and payment
Starter is free. Core costs £19 a month. What each plan includes is set out on our membership page, and today it is:
Starter
- Your full personalised pathway, every lesson open
- Practice questions with instant marking & hints
- CERA to explain and test you, every day
- Industrial cases in 2D: trace a plant’s process
- Starter resources from the library
- Progress tracking & community access
Core: everything in Starter, plus
- Step-by-step worked solutions to check every attempt against
- CERA’s Solve and Generate question modes
- Six times Starter’s daily CERA allowance
- Every industrial case in 3D: build the plant, handle its upsets
- The lessons each case draws on, linked into your pathway
- The full resource library: every cheat sheet and guide
Pro is not on sale yet, and registering your interest in it doesn’t commit you or us to anything.
- Paid plans renew automatically each month on your billing date until you cancel. Payments are taken by Stripe, our payment provider, on its secure checkout page. We never see or store your full card number.
- Prices are in pounds sterling and are the total you pay each month.
- If you move up to a higher plan, it starts straight away. Moving between paid plans, you pay the difference for the rest of your current billing month, then the new price from your next billing date.
- If you move down to a lower plan, the change takes effect at the end of the billing month you’ve already paid for.
- If a payment fails, we keep your plan running while Stripe tries your card again, and we let you know so you can update it. If the payment still can’t be taken, your paid plan ends and your account moves to Starter.
- You can update your card and see your receipts on the Billing & plan page.
- If we change the price of a plan, we’ll tell you at least 30 days before you first pay the new price, so you can cancel before then if you don’t want to continue.
Cancelling your plan
You can cancel a paid plan at any time on the Billing & plan page. Your plan keeps running until the end of the billing month you’ve paid for, then your account moves to Starter and you won’t be charged again. You can undo a cancellation at any time before that date.
If you’re a consumer, you also have a legal right to cancel within 14 days of first starting a paid plan. These terms don’t change that right.
Getting help
If something isn’t working, or you have a problem with your plan, a payment or the service, contact our support team at info@chemengstudent.com. Tell us the email address on your account and what happened, and we’ll look into it.
If you’re unhappy with how something has been handled, tell us the same way and we’ll do our best to put it right.
CERA
CERA, the Chemical Engineering Reasoning Assistant, is the AI assistant built into The ChemEng Student. She explains topics, tests you, and helps you work through problems.
- CERA’s answers are written by an artificial intelligence model. She can make mistakes, so check important working, results and facts against your course material, your lecturers or a reliable textbook.
- Every plan includes CERA’s Explain and Test Me modes. Solve and Generate question come with Core.
- Each plan has a daily allowance for CERA, shown as a percentage, and Core’s is larger than Starter’s. It resets at midnight UK time. When it runs out, CERA stops answering until the next day.
- At very busy times we may pause CERA for a while. If we do, her screen says so before you type.
- We save your conversations with CERA so you can come back to them, and you can delete any of them. Our Privacy policy explains what we keep and for how long.
- CERA is there to help you learn. Follow your university’s rules on using AI, and don’t submit her answers as your own work where those rules don’t allow it.
- Don’t use CERA to create anything harmful or unlawful, or try to get around her safety checks. Some messages are refused automatically, and a refused message doesn’t use any of your allowance.
Learning content, not professional advice
Everything in The ChemEng Student, including lessons, practice questions, worked solutions, the industrial cases, resources and CERA’s answers, is for education and information. It isn’t professional advice of any kind, including engineering, legal, financial or medical advice. Don’t rely on it for decisions about real plant, equipment or safety.
- The industrial cases run on simplified teaching models. Their figures show how a plant responds, not readings from a real one.
- Practice answers are marked automatically against our answer key, within a sensible tolerance. If you think a mark is wrong, tell us at info@chemengstudent.com.
We work hard to keep our content accurate and up to date, but we can’t promise any particular result from using it, such as a grade in an exam.
Using the service fairly
When you use The ChemEng Student, you agree not to:
- copy, download in bulk, share, sell or sublicense our lessons, videos, questions, worked solutions or resources, make new material from them, or use automated tools to collect them
- share your account, or give a group or class access to it, unless we’ve agreed in writing
- try to get into accounts, data or parts of the service that aren’t yours, or disrupt, probe or test our security without our written permission
- get around plan limits, CERA’s daily allowance or any other restriction
- upload or send anything unlawful, harmful or abusive, anything containing viruses or other malicious code, or anything that infringes someone else’s rights
- harass, abuse or discriminate against anyone in any community space we run, or use one to promote illegal activity
If you find a security problem, please tell us at info@chemengstudent.com rather than testing it further.
Our content and yours
We, or the people who license content to us, own the lessons, videos, questions, worked solutions, industrial cases, resources and everything else that makes up the service. While you have an account, you may use the content your plan includes for your own personal study.
Resources you download, such as cheat sheets and guides, are protected in the same way. They’re for your own study, so please don’t publish them or pass them on.
The ChemEng Student name, logo and branding, and CERA, are ours. Please don’t use them without our written permission.
The questions you ask and the answers you give stay yours. You allow us to store and use them to provide the service to you, as our Privacy policy explains. If you send us feedback, reports or ideas, we may use them to improve the service.
Emails from us
We email you about your account, including sign-in codes, payments and important changes to the service. We may also send study reminders, progress summaries and news about new features. You can switch those off at any time in Settings, and every one includes a link to unsubscribe. Switching them off doesn’t stop emails about your account or payments.
Links to other websites
Lesson videos play through YouTube, and our community meets on Discord. We link to these and other websites for your convenience, but we don’t control them and aren’t responsible for their content.
Some articles and interviews include contributions from guests. Their views are their own and aren’t necessarily ours.
Changes to the service
We’re improving The ChemEng Student all the time. Sections marked Beta work, but are still changing and may sometimes behave unexpectedly.
We may change, add or remove features. If a change means your paid plan no longer includes something important you were paying for, or if we stop offering a paid plan altogether, we’ll tell you in advance and you can cancel.
We aim to keep the service available at all times, but it may occasionally be unavailable for maintenance or because of problems outside our control. When we take it down for maintenance, the site says so.
Our responsibility to you
The ChemEng Student is for your personal study. To the fullest extent the law allows:
- We aren’t responsible for lost grades, marks, time or data, or for decisions you make based on our content or CERA’s answers.
- We aren’t responsible for business losses, such as lost profit, lost income or lost business opportunities.
- We aren’t responsible for losses we couldn’t reasonably have foreseen, or for problems caused by things outside our control, such as failures of the internet, your device or services run by others.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our responsibility where the law doesn’t allow it to be excluded or limited. That includes responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, and your legal rights as a consumer.
Suspending or closing accounts
You can stop using the service at any time. To close your account and have your data deleted, email us at info@chemengstudent.com.
We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, or if we need to in order to protect the service, other students or us. We may also suspend an account while we look into suspected fraud, misuse or a security problem with it. Where we reasonably can, we’ll tell you why first and give you a chance to put things right.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when we add features or when the law changes. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed. If a change affects you significantly, we’ll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect, and if you don’t agree you can cancel before then.
The law that applies
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and you can bring legal proceedings in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland, you can also bring proceedings in Scotland. If you live in Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in Northern Ireland.
We run The ChemEng Student from the United Kingdom, and students around the world use it. If you use it from another country, you’re responsible for following the laws that apply to you there.
If a court decides that part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest of the terms still apply.
